Perched in the serene village Hamini of Tirthan Valley, the Sunshine Himalayan Cottage stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of traditional Himachali architecture and modern comforts. This charming retreat offers an immersive experience into the beauty and tranquility of the Himalayan landscape.
Sunshine Himalayan Cottage, which is located on the banks of the River Tirthan caught my attention in particular while I was planning for my trip to Tirthan valley. Sunshine Cottages epitomize the perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort, set against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty. This serene retreat is a haven for those seeking tranquility and an intimate connection with nature.

Enchanting Natural Beauty
Sunshine Himalayan Cottage is enveloped by the pristine natural beauty of Tirthan Valley. The lush green valley, cradled by the majestic Himalayan peaks, is a paradise for nature lovers. The Tirthan River meanders through the valley, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the blue sky and the surrounding verdant hills. The area is rich in biodiversity, with dense forests, vibrant wildflowers, and apple orchards adding to the scenic splendor. The gentle rustling of leaves, the melodic chirping of birds, and the soothing sound of the flowing river create a peaceful symphony that enhances the overall experience.

Traditional Himachali Architecture
The Kathkuni architecture of the cottage is a beautiful representation of traditional Himachali design, characterized by the use of locally sourced materials and craftsmanship that reflects the cultural heritage of the region. I was enchanted sitting on the crimson lounger and admired the colour of the river from the verandah. Sunshine Himalayan Cottage is one of the best-located properties in Tirthan Valley and the area holds a lot of flora, thus making it a home for different bird species.
Construction and Materials
Sloping Roofs: The steep, sloping roofs, typical of Himachali kathkuni architecture, are designed to handle the heavy snowfall of the region. These roofs, often adorned with traditional wooden brackets and carvings, add an elegant touch to the cottage.

Wood and Stone: The cottage is constructed using a combination of wood and stone, materials that are abundant in the region. The wooden beams, panels, and intricate carvings lend a warm and inviting feel to the structure, while the stone foundations and walls provide sturdiness and resilience against the elements.

Design Elements
Verandas and Balconies: The cottage features spacious verandas and balconies that offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. These outdoor spaces are perfect for relaxing with a cup of tea while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
Large Windows: Large windows are strategically placed to maximize natural light and provide uninterrupted views of the picturesque landscape, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors.
The Rooms
The rooms are spacious and each balcony opens to a spectacular riverside view. One side of the property is outlined with the trout-filled river while the other, with a sea of lush trees. Step out of the door onto the deck and you’ll be looking down into the water. You can even clamber and sit upon the rocks on the river and dip your feet into the freezing cold water. With your toes dipped in and eyes towards the many waterfalls crashing down, far away in the distance, your job, stress and struggles will seem so insignificant. The cottage provides all the modern comforts of a modern home with the healing Himalayan hospitality. The cottage is located on the brims of the World Heritage Site, The Great Himalayan National Park.

Outdoor Spaces and Gardens
The beauty of Sunshine Himalayan Cottage extends to its meticulously maintained outdoor spaces and gardens.
Scenic Gardens:
Native Plants and Flowers: The gardens are filled with native plants, wildflowers, and apple trees, creating a vibrant and colorful landscape. Stone pathways wind through the gardens, inviting guests to take leisurely strolls and explore the natural beauty.

Riverside Seating: Comfortable seating areas by the river provide a perfect spot for meditation, reading, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the flowing water.

Communal Spaces: Designated areas for bonfires and barbecues offer communal spaces where guests can gather in the evenings, share stories, and enjoy the warmth of a fire under the starry Himalayan sky.

Embracing Nature
One of the highlights of staying at Sunshine Cottages is the close proximity to nature. The property is surrounded by apple orchards and dense forests, providing ample opportunities for nature walks and bird watching. In the morning, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the sight of mist rising from the river, creating a magical ambiance.

I spent my day exploring the beautiful trails around the property. One of the most memorable hikes was to a nearby waterfall, where the crystal-clear water cascaded down rocks, creating a serene and picturesque setting. The hike was invigorating, and the cool, refreshing water was a perfect reward at the end.
Culinary Delights
The culinary experience at Sunshine Cottages was a delightful surprise. The in-house restaurant served a variety of delicious dishes, made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Each meal was a treat, from hearty breakfasts with homemade bread and jams to sumptuous dinners featuring traditional Himachali cuisine. The experience of dining under the stars, with the sound of the river flowing nearby, was truly enchanting.

Jalori Pass: A drive to Jalori Pass provided breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. At the top, I visited the serene Serolsar Lake, a beautiful high-altitude lake surrounded by dense forests.
Chehni Kothi: This ancient watchtower, located in a nearby village, offered a glimpse into the architectural heritage of the region. The climb to the top was steep, but the view from the summit was worth the effort.
